Redress Design Award 2018 Semi-FINALIST

Bio

Lavinia Mustapha is a semi-finalist of the Redress Design Award 2018 and holds a degree in Fashion Design from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Lavinia is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Textiles from Royal College of Art, UK.

As the new generation of designers, it is our responsibility to make sure we do not contribute any further to the toxic system that is the fashion industry today. We should do what we love, but we should do it taking into our hands the situation of the world as it is today. Fashion made sustainably should be the only way. - Lavinia Mustapha

redress Design Award Collection

For her Redress Design Award submission, Lavinia was inspired by traditional paper making techniques, which she mirrors in the creation of her collection. Up-cycling a variety of textile waste sourced from her university and textile mills, she starts by reducing fabric to small pieces and then bonding them to create a new fabric. Lavinia creates a textural contrast through delicate layering and geometric forms, with transparency and originality.
