Magdalena MALBRAN

Redress Design Award 2014/15 SEMI-Finalist

Bio

Magdalena’s eponymous brand based in France and Argentina produces unique, made-to-measure wedding dresses and partywear handmade in her atelier, and focuses on using traditional techniques such as hand embroidery. Dresses are made from a mixture of new and upcycled fabrics with a zero-waste focus - all surplus fabrics from production are integrated into future pieces. She brings into the brand rich experience from working with Agatha Ruiz de la Prada in Madrid, Jenny Packham in Paris and Iris Van Herpen in Amsterdam, where she learnt how to utilise various haute couture techniques and materials, such as working with 3-D pieces, leather and silicone. Magdalena has a BA in Clothing and Textile Design from The University of Palermo and graduated from Stylisme et Modélisme at ESMOD Paris, specialising in textiles.

As a designer, my practice foregrounds a humane spirit and technical mastery. I’m conscious that every action affects the environment as well as the people I interact with, so I work daily on being friendly—indeed a broad notion of sustainability encompasses not just responsibility towards nature but also towards preserving old artisanal techniques, transforming and adapting them to the present. In my atelier, I create beautiful dresses trying to show the world how important hand-made processes are, how significant is to respect each other, and how vital it is to make the past present. Fashion will not grow through mass production; rather, the future lies in eco-friendly unique design made locally”. - Magdalena Malbran
