2019 Overview

The first truly global edition in its 8 year history, the 2018 competition cycle reached far and wide with a record-breaking number of applications received from 55 countries, from designers applying fashion’s waste to their collections through creative approaches. Our judges shortlisted 30 semi-finalists and then selected the final 11 who developed 5 piece collections using their various different waste streams together with one or more of the different techniques of zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction. The educational programme engaged with over 900 emerging designers in a series of lectures and workshops and a further 5,000 others via our LEARN platform, on which a new guide on fibres was added.

2019 overview

The 9th cycle of the Redress Design Award attracted hundreds of applications from talented and emerging designers from 45 regions, with designers applying textile waste to their collections ranging from old wedding gowns to defected camping gear. This year’s candidates performed outstandingly, implementing original and innovative approaches in attempts to create sustainable fashion. From a large pool of applicants, a further 30 were shortlisted into our semi finalists, and a final 10 were selected. The finalists visited Hong Kong for 10 days, during which they were immersed in the fashion supply chain to examine potential disruption points and learn about new innovations from TAL Apparel’s, VF Corporation and The Mills. In the midst of a hectic and busy week, the Finalists were challenged to work in two teams of five to create a two-piece up-cycled outfit, inspired by the heritage of Hong Kong and the hallmark details of a dress shirt for Cara G Mcllroy, host of Frontline Fashion, to wear at the Grand Final Fashion Show.

The Grand Final Show took place on the 5th of September 2019 at HKTDC’s fashion week CENTRESTAGE where the Finalists showed their 5 pieces collections in front of an astounding audience of 1,000 fashion influencers and VIP guests. Among the multiple prizes awarded through the cycle the main prize is an opportunity to create an up-cycled retail collection for sustainable fashion brand REVERB, under the JNBY Group, one of Mainland China’s largest fashion houses and a tailored mentorship with distinguished sustainable fashion designer, Orsola de Castro.
