Beatrice Bocconi

Italian designer Beatrice Bocconi launched a mini bag series with each bag uniquely handmade and upcycled from scraps sourced around her. ‘Beats’ makes use of forgotten fabrics and odd accessories collected through the years, from samples collected from her father’s workplace to beads from her grandmother’s drawers. The collection is available on Italy-based platform Magarchvio.

Felipe Wu

Felipe Wu Yuhao showcased his graduate collection at London Fashion Week 2022’s University of Westminster MA Menswear show in June. ‘KIDS, THE PARTY HAS BRGUN’ explores fluidity, particularly as it relates to gender. By applying traditional womenswear styles onto menswear, the garments embrace bold colours and break boundaries between the two. Mixing a diversity of styles including LGBTQ+ fashion, the Club Kids subculture, ‘80s men’s tailoring, animal prints, rhinestone chains, and pleating, the collection experiments with new possibilities for menswear design.

Grace Lant

Taking inspiration from family, Hong Kong designer Grace Lant and her co-founders at Love From Blue recently launched ‘Three Sisters’, in which the Sun, the Sea, and the Moon come together to create one unified collection. Created from surplus wool, cotton, and cashmere, the collection also adds new jersey styles and printed tees to their main lineup of knitwear.

After winning the Redress Design Award 2021 Alumni Prize, Grace also partnered with Kipling to reinvent their iconic ‘ART M’ bag using surplus fabrics from their parent company, VF Corporation. The resulting design, inspired by iconic Hong Kong landscapes adopted neutral colour palettes alongside modular features, for a trend-spanning versatile staple.

Jesse Lee

Hong Kong designer Jesse Lee presented his graduate collection at London Fashion Week 2022’s University of Westminster MA Menswear show in June. ‘BE A MAN (with feelings)!’ addresses throwaway culture and toxic masculinity by embracing vulnerability, transforming abandoned T-shirts and jerseys into playful garments. Through trapunto quilting, cutwork embroidery, and reverse appliquéto techniques, Jesse reengineers the negative space of materials into positive embellishment and function. His innovative zero-waste crafting results in garments that are toy-like, comfortable, and high quality.

Jessica Chang

This year Taiwanese designer Jessica Chang launched her brand PCES’ first collection ‘THE WALLS’, which — building on her Redress Design Award 2021 collection — explores forms of walls found in nature, society, and the inner self. The collection embraces technology by infusing recycled materials during the spinning process and upcycling surplus fabrics. With a neutral colour palette, garments are designed to be versatile for multiple occasions and weather conditions.

Following her Redress Design Award First Prize win, Jessica also collaborated with VF’s Timberland design team in China, working remotely to collaborate on their upcoming Lunar New Year 2023 collection, ‘Year of the Rabbit’. Hear from Jessica on her experience in our exclusive interview here.

Kévin Germanier

In March, Kévin Germanier debuted on the official schedule of Paris Fashion Week, with a second show set for October. Bright and feathery garments dazzled, with his signature upcycled beading and Swarovski crystals embellished on jeans, and on boots in collaboration with UGG. Kévin continues to dress the stars, including Chelsea Lazkani, who wore one of his knitted pieces in the popular reality TV show Selling Sunset (season 5, episode 9), and drag queen La Grande Dame, who is featuring Kévin’s looks on Drag Race France.

Nessie Croft

Australian designer Nessie Croft launched her autumn/winter 2022 collection ‘Weekly Essentials’ through her brand, Coreprêt. Bright and versatile, the limited edition release made from luxurious designer surplus fabrics and upcycled materials aims to serve as an evergreen wardrobe. From sleekly silhouetted pants to avocado-dyed T-shirts, the everyday items are designed to be both timeless and flattering.
